The Different Types of Bark Collars and How They Work

Dogs don't need special apparent reasons for barking. It comes naturally for them, they do it in instances of trouble or in cases when they are overly excited or simply mad. Despite being natural, this barking instinct that dogs have can become a nuisance for you, your neighbours and passers-by. Fortunately, there is one simple device that can control your dog's behaviour and can help in the fight against constant barking. I am talking about bark collars. Here are some more details.

The main purpose of bark collars is to break the habit of barking that your dog surely has. What is important to be mentioned is that small and large dog barking collar is not a means for punishment, but rather a controller for negative and in some cases unsafe actions. The secret to its productivity is the sensation of a slightly unpleasant jolt, sound or spray, which the dog will associate with bad action and in time will stop doing it. Additionally, you should be aware that all the activities of the collar are safe for your dog, and will definitely not cause any long-lasting damages or any physical harm. What they will certainly do, is grab your dog's attention. Listed and explained below are the types of collars you should consider.

One type is the static shock bark collars. Be it small, or a large dog barking collar – how this works is the collar detects the vibration of the vocal cords as your dog starts barking. Once it detects the vibration, the collar delivers a low-level shock to your dog's neck. The mechanism sends out the shock through two metal prongs that touch the dog's throat. An additional feature that this type of collar has is the shock intensity regulator. So, you can start with a low level of intensity, and increase it if the behaviour worsens. Just be careful, make sure that you are not stressing your furry friend.

Another type of bark collars are the ultrasonic collars. These stop your pet from barking by emitting a high-pitched sound which is imperceptible by humans and irritating and distracting for dogs. And lastly, there is a citronella bark collar. As the name implies, this collar sends out a citronella-scented spray as soon as your dog starts barking. The scent is unpleasant and it bothers the dog. That is why the collar works. After the dog feels the scent it stops barking and remembers that this is the result of his actions.

As seen above the types of collars vary, but they all serve the same purpose. Another thing that they all have in common in order to do their job is that they need to perfectly fit your dog's throat. It is supposed to feel snug, not too tight and not too loose either.
