Cat Owners: Tips for Preparing the Home for the New Feline Member

So you’ve decided to enlarge your family by adopting a cat and you’re ready to become a cat parent, that’s purrfect! However, this doesn’t mean your home is ready for the cat as is and if you want your feline to feel at home you have to cat-proof it same way you would child-proof it for a child by covering the electrical cords, removing toxic plants and small items that can be swallowed, securing windows with screens and, of course, acquiring all the amenities needed for comfort.

This means you’re going to have to shop for all the necessary supplies for a cat before bringing your furry friend home, getting basics such as bowls for food and water, litter box that you’d place away from the eating area because cats are clean that way, and don’t forget to include a little safe haven where your new kitty could hide and have its much-needed privacy that’s crucial especially when getting to know the home; remember, cats value their personal space!

Sure, boxes would do knowing how much cats love boxes, though if you want to make it a little fun it’s a great idea to use the vertical space by adding some climbing poles, cat trees and condos. Cats enjoy being in high places, surveying their territory, so this allows them to do what’s in their nature, the love of climbing, and still without taking up any floor space; it’s a win-win option for you and your cat!

Likewise, unless you want to see your precious furniture or decorating items being shredded little by little it’s advisable to get supplies for a cat like scratching posts and if your kitty can’t get into the habit of using them and still prefers your furniture instead rely on tricks by placing treats and catnip around the scratching area to lure them in and encourage them.

Every cat is different same way we people are so give your cat the time to get used to the new home, be patient and don’t try to rush things or you risk causing aggressive behaviour and ruining the relationship you two share. A nice strategy for relaxation, that is apart from treats, is the use of toys which makes them another priority among the rest of items on the supply list.

Since every kitty needs regular vet checks, the crate is going to be an item often used and you should make it your mission to first carefully choose and then once you’ve bought the right one make the cat feel comfortable when inside it. Use treats and toys if you must, just make sure the cat enjoys the crate before the trips to the vet!
