How to Adjust Your Motorcycle For a More Comfortable Ride

Many people, when they get their first bike, go for years without adjusting anything on them. Some of them aren't even aware that they can, while others are just content with the way things are, and they force their bodies to adapt to the bike, not the other way around. However, what people who are new to motorcycles don't realise, is that making their motorcycles more comfortable and ergonomic for their bodies can take them a long way in enjoying their rides more.

Nowadays, motorcycles are designed to be adjustable to the wide range of body types of people riding them. The most common adjustments people make are to the motorcycle handlebar controls, namely, the levers, the clip-on handlebars and the seat. Let's start with adjusting your seat first.

Most seats aren't adjustable, but modifying the seat yourself or changing it completely can make a huge difference when riding your bike. Aftermarket seats are made of quality padding materials and adjustable seat height. Both these things ensure a much more comfortable ride, especially when riding for longer times. You can also get a seat cover to protect your investment against the elements and dust or dirt.

Adjusting the clip-on handlebars on the motorcycle handlebar controls allows you to have them closer in or wider out. All you need to do is loosen the pitch bolts and rotate them in or out into a position that's more comfortable for you. Then, you just tighten them back up. Generally, therea re two pinch-bolts that hold the clip-ons onto the fork leg, so when tightening them, ensure you do it evenly. Check the torque specs and use a torque wrench if possible.

Adjusting the levers is one of the first adjustments people do on their bike. The main reason for that is because people engage with the levers most often - literally every time you go or stop. With that said, any discomfort caused by their awkward positioning can build up over time and become noticeable. Levers that are too high will force you to strain your wrists to grab them, while those that are too low will force you to reach out for them.

Adjusting the levers is as simple as loosening the clam on the clip-on and rotating it towards where they feel comfortable. You can do this by placing your motorcycle on a stand, while you sit on it in a riding position. Turn the levers until they start feeling natural in your hand, then tighten the clamp. That's all there is to it.
